Friday is fish fry night in Rochester. When I was growing up here, every Catholic church, every social club and every restaurant served fried haddock, French fries, cole slaw, and a roll on Friday nights. Every Rochesterian had their favorite fish fry place. My father belonged to the 40/8 club on University Avenue, so that’s where we went.
The custom has dropped off a bit in recent years, but there are still plenty of places to get a good fish fry here. Gary and I like the Branding Iron in Ontario. This is what you get for $9.99. This plus a dish of cole slaw (which I already ate. I love cole slaw.) And rolls. If you substitute the French fries with rice and only eat the top crust and leave the bottom like I do now, it’s almost health food. Isn’t fish supposed to help your brain?
During Lent you can get a fish fry on Wednesday as well as Friday. One more reason you’ve gotta love Rochester.
