Day 90

I did it! I met my goal of 11,000 steps every day in March. That gives me 100 %, an A by any measure. I’m only feeling a little bit guilty because it was sort of an easy A, walking here in Florida,  like getting an A in Game Playing 101. The real challenge will be […]

Day 89

There are lots of flowers blooming in Florida now. Two of my favorites are bougainvillea (don’t you just love saying bougainvillea?) and hibiscus. Bougainvillea has a high salt tolerance and needs a winter temperature of at least 60 degrees so it thrives here in Florida. I’ve seen it in purple, pink, white and yellow. Hibiscus, […]

Day 88

“Sign, sign, everywhere a sign, Blockin’ out the scenery, breakin’ my mind.” Do you remember that song from 1972 by the Five Man Electrical Band? Here are some signs that I’ve seen while stepping in Florida. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.   Day 88: 12,642 Steps      YTD: 854,302 Steps     Goal: 825,000 Steps

Day 87

It rained all day so in order to get my steps in, I had to do what I do at home – I went to the mall. Malls are all alike in some ways. The Merritt Square Mall on Merritt Island is no exception. It has the 4 anchor stores, the jewelry kiosks, and the food […]

Day 86

Florida is finally going green. All of the places we’ve stayed have big recycling bins for the first time this year. It used to really bother us that we had to throw out all the things that we would recycle at home. Not any more… We also noticed that the town has installed new solar […]

Day 85

Cape Canaveral is full of many other activities besides sending rockets into space. There are all kinds of large ships going in and out of the port. I’ve seen container ships, large fishing vessels, and even a submarine at one time or another. In recent years, more and more cruise ships have made Port Canaveral their home. […]

Day 84

When it comes to waterslides, count me as one of the kids. Okay, it’s a little embarassing to be the tallest, not to mention the oldest person in line, but I’ve been embarassed for lesser rewards than this. You might be surprised that a non-athletic person like myself would like waterslides so much, but waterslides […]

Day 83

If you have surfers, then you have to have surf shops. Cocoa Beach has 2 huge competitive surf shops. The first one, Ron Jon’s, has been in business for over 40 years. It started in a small shack at the Jersey shore, but has been in Florida for years now. It has 2 stories and […]

Day 82

Back in Cocoa Beach. Did you know that Cocoa Beach is the east coast surfing mecca? Most of the surfing action takes place around the Cocoa Beach pier, where surfing classes are held every day. At Easter time every year, they hold a surfing competition. Personally, I gave up surfing at the same time I […]

Day 81

Today I stepped over this bridge into adventure. I looked into a hippo’s mouth. I had a gourmet lunch on the savannah.  And I swam with the crocodiles. Okay, I didn’t actually swim with the crocodiles, but I did watch them swim. Where was this great adventure? Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I’ll probably never get to Africa, […]
