Take a break from winter today and step into spring at George Eastman House. Every year at this time GEH has their Dutch Connection display of over 2,000 bulbs. The colors are spectacular, although a departure from Eastman’s preference for monochromatic flower arrangements. I’m partial to daffodils, but I have to admit that the hyacinths were the most beautiful shade of purple.
The bulbs were mainly in the conservatory, but there were many green plants and also orchids scattered throughout the rest of the house. The smells were wonderful too.
Besides the flowers, GEH has a special display of Civil War photos and their regular exhibits. I always learn something new when I go there. Today I learned that in the 1920s George Eastman tried to change the calendar. He thought it would be much more efficient for business to have 13 months a year, each with 28 days, 4 weeks. The extra month would be called Sol and be inserted between June and July. Eastman even took his idea to the League of Nations, but, of course, it never caught on. The most interesting thing is that he instituted this calendar at Kodak, where it was used until 1989.
