Today is the birthday of my twin nieces. I don’t think they’d mind me revealing that their birth year was 1969. This is a poem I wrote several years ago with that birthday in mind. Have a great day, Shelly and Kelly. I love you.
1969
America Left on a Jet Plane
Armstrong and Aldrin left for the moon.
Boys in braces left for Viet Nam.
(or Canada)
Havens and Hendrix left for Woodstock.
Easy Rider left for the road.
Tommy and Dickie left CBS.
Elvis left for the ghetto.
The Mets left the Orioles eating worms.
Mary Jo left the party too soon.
And, in a small town in Michigan
twin girls left the womb and
made straight for the boarding gate.
I’m still along for the ride.
