April 17, 2015 Ladybugs

Did you know that New York has a state insect? In 1989, coccinella novemnotata, the nine-spotted ladybug, was named New York State’s official insect. Unfortunately this particular ladybug has not been seen in a while. Cornell University is asking kids to send them a digital picture if they find the C-9 ladybug. For more information check out www.lostladybug.org. Meanwhile, here’s a poem that addresses this situation.

X-actly

X-actly where is the ladybug?

the ladybug of New York fame,

the crop friendly nine-spotted ladybug,

Coccinella Novemnotata by name.

X-actly where is the ladybug?

It’s hard to believe we’ve lost her.

Where has New York’s ladybug gone?

Haven’t you come across her?

      Is she under that rock?

No. It’s just a red sock.

Is she on that oak tree?

      Can’t you see, it’s a flea?

Is she there on that leaf?

      It’s beyond all belief.

X-actly where is the ladybug?

Make an X wherever you find her.

Then give her a kiss.

Make a quick wish.

And take off and follow behind her.
