January 22, 2014 Mine and More

The grands are learning new words so quickly now that every time I see them (which is almost every day) they surprise me with their new vocabulary. And they have favorite words. Evan’s favorite word right now is “mine.” Everything that he touches is “mine.” Molly’s favorite word is “more.” She can have a tray full of food and something in each hand and still be asking for “more.” Now, we adults in their lives don’t just ignore this. Over and over again we remind Evan that not everything is his, and we reassure Molly that she has enough. And mine and more are not always bad words. I love it when Evan calls me “my Oma,” and I love it when Molly says “more” at the end of a book. The truth, I think, is that we all struggle with mine and more for most of our lives. What are we willing to share, and what do we reserve for ourselves? And just today I bought a new blouse when I have a closet full. Did I really need one more? If the best way to teach kids is by example, I’m in trouble. How about you?
