The Gananda Parkway in my neighborhood has wide, paved shoulders, but today I chose to walk totally off the road in the dirt. I didn’t like the idea of just a white painted line separating me from speeding cars. I think the tragedy in Boston struck a little too close to home. Not that any of my family was in Boston, but they’re all marathoners, and so are their friends. So for today at least, I wanted to put as much distance as possible between myself and danger. An illusion of safety.
