March 27, 2013 Syracuse China

It’s been really cool here in Florida so Gary and I have had to find other things to do beside walk the beach and sit in the sun. Today we went to MOAS, a museum of arts and science in Daytona. One of the most popular displays at the museum is the skeleton of a giant sloth. (think dinosaur) Now, where else can you go to see a sloth skeleton?

My favorite part of the museum was the Root family collection. The Roots were glass bottle makers in Indiana when they entered a contest in 1915 to design a bottle for Coca-Cola. You can guess the rest of the story. They made lots of money, and moved to Daytona because the grandson loved auto racing. The museum has their collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia and  racing memorabilia along with a collection of quilts and teddy bears.

Next to the Root collection, there is a separate building that houses two railway cars. Alongside the cars is a display of china that was used on railways all over the country. There had to be at least a couple dozen different patterns, and at least twenty of them were Syracuse China. I’d always heard that Syracuse China was renowned, but I thought that was just  Western New York pride talking. Now I realize that the reputation was well deserved. Fancy that. I had to go to Florida to find out about something from New York State.
