What do Boy Scout knots, Hungarian folk costumes and beach chairs from the early 1900’s have in common? They’re all on display at The Casements, John D. Rockefeller’s winter home in Ormond Beach. By billionaire standards, The Casements is on the modest side, but it has a great location along the Halifax River and wonderful windows (hence the name) and porches to access the sea breezes.
Unlike George Eastman House, The Casements has not been furnished as it was in Rockefeller’s era. Rather, the house is an arts center for all kinds of displays, programs, and classes. Why the Boy Scouts and Hungarian costumes? Because someone in the community had an interest in Boy Scout memorabilia, collected pieces from all over the US, and then chose to share it. Ditto the Hungarian costumes. The rattan beach chair is actually something you would expect to see here, as was the rectangular baby grand piano.
So where can you find art and culture? Anywhere someone has an interest and is willing to share it. What do you have to share?
