Last weekend I stepped out to Michigan to attend a baby shower for my niece Shelly, who is expecting twin girls in a few weeks. Shelly is a twin herself, so there was a sense of deja vu along with the usual fun and good wishes. With my daughters, my grandson, and my sister-in-law’s sister along, the whole weekend was a celebration of family. The car was jammed full of people and luggage, presents and laughter.
In keeping with the family theme, I had been working on twin baby quilts for the previous couple of weeks. What made these quilts special was that the Sunbonnet Sue appliques came off of a quilt that had been in my family for years. The original quilt was very well used and worn beyond repair, but the Sunbonnet Sues were salvagable.
I love the fact that these quilts touch the past as well as the future. I also love the fact that the quilts are alike but different – just like twins.
