Segways are all the rage on the space coast this year, so today Gary and I took a segway tour around Port Canaveral. The fact that our tour destination was Auddino’s Italian Bakery for cookies had nothing (well, almost nothing) to do with my enthusiasm. I’d been wanting to try riding a segway since I’d first seen one at Disneyworld a few years ago.
In case you haven’t heard of or seen a segway, it’s a mode of personal transportation powered by a battery. Think the Jetsons.
My kids were not sure that the segway was not meant for me. They thought that Sally and Segway did not go together just because I’ve been known to trip a fall a time or two or eight. So, of course, I had to try it just to prove them wrong.
I admit that my sense of balance is not perfect, but it turns out that the segway does the balancing for you. It’s easy to ride – I never felt like I was going to fall off. The speed and direction are all controled by your weight. Now, weight is something I know about, so this machine was more suited to me than anybody thought. After just a few minutes of instruction, I was turning circles in place. The only downside to the segway that I could see was that the bottoms of my feet hurt, as did everyone else’s, and on the segway you feel every bump. It was harder on the body in that way more than walking or running. The upside was cruising along at 12 mph. Oh, did I mention that it’s fun?
So now that I’ve mastered segway riding, I’m thinking about parasailing. How hard can it be????
