February 29, 2012 Dog Years

How are you spending your extra day?

I’ve spent some time today thinking about dogs. I’m not really a dog person. I grew up with cats, afraid of dogs. But, that’s not to say that there haven’t been certain dogs in my life that I’ve grown to appreciate or even love.

One of those dogs is Oliver, my granddog. Ollie is an 8 pound Yorkie who thinks he’s a German Sheperd. Ollie wrote the book on attitude, and he’s fiercely loyal to my daughter, Robyn. I love him for that. Today is Ollie’s birthday so he’s 2 or 8 depending on how you’re counting. Yes, Ollie’s a leapster, born on Feb. 29, 2004. Happy Birthday, Oliver!

The other dog I’m thinking about today is Lexi, my brother’s pug. Lexi has been having serious health issues in the last few weeks: insulin dependant diabetes, blindness, incontinence, etc. Bill and Sue have been agonizing over whether to put Lexi to sleep and have come to the conclusion that that is the kindest thing to do. Rest in peace, Lexi. You’ve enriched so many lives, and you will be greatly missed.
