Day 313

My favorite thing to do in Rochester is to go to George Eastman House in November for the Gingerbread House display. This year there are a record 100 houses on display at all skill levels from Brownie troops up to professional chefs. It’s impossible to pick a favorite, but here are a few that I like.

I spent a lot of time looking at this gingerbread Candyland Board, and I still don’t think I saw everything on it. I love the little A-frame house with the peanut roof, and I love how the word Candyland is spelled out in candy canes. The whole thing is extremely well done.

The snow globe is unique. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a gingerbread snow globe before. It’s beautifully done, and captures the magic of a traditional snowglobe.

The church is a replica of Fairport Baptist. It has stained glass windows made from candy which are visible from the electric light inside. By the front door are a bride and groom. This display was made in honor of a 50th wedding anniversary.

And then there’s my favorite donut shop. As you can see, this display is also lit up so you can see the counter and stools and booths inside. A perfect replica.

The other 96 houses are all also worth oohing and aahing over. Do yourself a favor and go see this display. Just don’t wait until Christmas. The houses are sold at a silent auction, and the buyers take them home in mid December.
