Today I went to Boot Camp – Picture Book Boot Camp that is. Lisa Wheeler gave an inspiring workshop on how to write a great picture book. We spent time revising our work right there on the spot. Less is more as words go in a picture book, and I sat there slashing away like mad. Lisa knows what she’s talking about, and if you want to get your kids or grandkids a Thanksgiving picture book, look for Lisa’s latest book, Turk and Runt. It’s very funny.
The workshop was held in the Fayetteville Library, which is housed in the former Stickley Furniture factory. There’s a new arts and crafts style front on the old building. The inside is attractive blend of old and new. I was surprised to come across this old scale built into the floor.
No, I didn’t stand on it, even though no one seemed to be nearby. For all I knew there might have been a digital sign in the lobby where the weights are displayed. Can you tell that I still haven’t gotten over having my weight shouted across the gym in elementary school? For a whole year, my brother’s friends called me 104 pounder. But that’s another story.
Hmmmm. I wonder how I could work that into a picture book.
