I’m spending a few weeks escaping the cold and snow and visiting my old friend, Walt Disney. Walt sure knew how to tell a story. As I’m enjoying walking around the world or worlds he created, I’m impressed again by how simple his stories are. Whether the setting is a midieval castle, an African plain, an underwater kingdom or a magic carpet, all of the stories basically have a good guy and/or girl and a bad guy and/or girl. It’s good against evil, and good always wins. The boy always gets the girl, and they always live happily ever after. There are a minimum of subplots and extra characters.
Yes, Disney makes these stories for children, but I bet that if we’re honest, these simple stories appeal to us as well. They wouldn’t be so successful without adult approval too. Of course, life is not always as simple as a Disney story, but in these increasingly perilous and complex times, don’t we all want to believe that good triumphs over evil? I believe it ultimately does. And that’s no fairy tale.
