Have you ever been to Sackets Harbor? It sits along Lake Ontario at the eastern end, and it’s full of history relating to the War of 1812. It’s also full of people who like books.
I did a book talk there last week, and they welcomed me with a sign and a pizza party. It was a teacher’s dream. The kids were all attentive and kind to each other and they liked talking about books.
Afterward, we spent some time walking in the harbor and poking around the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Discovery Center. Of course, I had to check out the giftshop, and much to my surprise I saw my books for sale there.
Don’t ask me why, but I’m always tempted to buy one of my books when I see it for sale somewhere. I resisted that temptation and explored more of the museum. My favorite display was of this cow. It was there to highlight NYS dairy farms. The best part was that when you pushed a button next to it, the cow sang “Stand By Your Man.” I kid you not.
You’ve got to love New York. What other state has singing cows?
