March 28, 2012 Skink, Skank, Skunk

Have you ever heard of the skink? Neither did I until last Sunday when the Orlando Sentinel ran an article about how  the development of a new sports complex is being delayed because skinks have been found under the sand. Apparently they are endangered. The skink looks like a very small snake. It’s about the size of a worm and has 2 legs that are nonfunctioning.

Rochesterians, don’t worry about encountering a skink. They live only in Florida, and live underground. A raised trail in the sand is the only sign of their presence.

So now, besides alligators, sharks, and Portugese men o’ war, Floridians have to worry about the skink. Who knew?
