Day 299

If at all possible, you’ve got to go see Million Dollar Quartet that’s playing at the Auditorium Theater. It’s such a feel good show. The singer/musician/actors who play Elvis and Johnny Cash are so good it’s spooky. With no intermission, it’s 2 hours of almost nonstop music. It’s the story of how Elvis, Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis all got their start at Sun Records under the guidance of Sam Phillips. What I took away from the show other than a good time was a reinforcement of the age-old adage to be yourself. In one scene Elvis is trying to sing like Dean Martin, and Sam tells him that if someone wants a Dean Martin song, they’ll buy Dean’s record, not Elvis’. Phillips had the gift of being able to see a person’s unique talent even before they did.

So sing your own music. Write in your own voice. Unveil your own unique self to the world. What are you waiting for?
