Today it was books, books, books, morning, noon and night. I had to really struggle to get my steps in.
MORNING: Started the day with a Bible study at Browncroft Community Church. This is an international nondenominational Bible study that just focuses on the Word. You are not allowed to talk about your own church or any political causes. That’s why I like it so much. Today’s lesson was from I Peter, exhorting us to become living stones, uniquely created and shaped by God, and joined together with the mortar of love and faith to be His temple. A nice image. I’m a little bit rough around the edges. How about you?
NOON: Today was also the monthly meeting of my book club, which meets at BOOKS, ETC. on Main St. in Macedon. We’ve been reading March by Geraldine Brooks. It’s a take-off from Little Women, told in the point of view of the father who is away fighting in the Civil War. This is an Pulitzer Prize winning novel, beautifully written. Parts of it, relating the horrors of war and slavery are pretty graphic, but I think we should never be allowed to forget just how horrific war is and how long the consequences go on. Read this book!
NIGHT: At the urging of Robyn, the girls and I went to hear David Sedaris speak at the Hochstein School. He’s the author of Me Talk Pretty One Day, among many other books, which are all collections of stories he has written based on personal experience. Hilariously funny, for his talk he read new stories that will eventually be compiled into another book. We laughed for an hour straight. He also had the grace to recommend another author’s book, River Town by Peter Hessler, about a 2 year visit to a town on the Yangtze River in China.
Must sign off now. Lots of reading to do.
