Day 244 Sea Breeze

When did the swans start making their home in Irondequoit Bay?

I was in Sea Breeze today enjoying a cheeseburger at Don’s Original. I don’t know about you, but when September 1 hits, I start going over my mental list of things that I like to do before summer’s over. When I realized that I hadn’t been to Sea Breeze yet for a burger I called my brother and we went. Now, I know that Vic & Irv’s and Bill Gray’s both have great food, but for nostalgia there’s nothing like Don’s Original. You can still sit at the counter or spread out at one of the six tables. Don’s is small, but that’s part of the appeal. A word of caution: you have to walk outside to use the bathroom. There is modern plumbing, and they’re clean enough, but it has a certain outhouse feel – again that’s part of the ambiance.

But, back to the swans. After lunch we took a walk around the outlet park. I expected to see ducks and geese and seagulls in the bay, but not swans. I counted over 20 of them and they’re beautiful, dwarfing even the geese. On the lake side of the park, there’s a pier that goes straight out for a bit and then turns at an angle to provide a breakwall.

And don’t tell anybody, but there’s a very small public beach just west of the pier. The perfect spot if you want to avoid the crowd at Charlotte or Durand. And the perfect spot to soak up the last rays of summer.
