I had no trouble getting my steps in today. I went to the U of R library to do some family history research, and like most college campuses, the parking area is nowhere near the buildings. I think this was only the second time in my life I’d actually been on the U of R campus, and it’s beautiful. Of course, I’d always admired the library’s dome, and I look for it when I fly into Rochester.
Today I found out that the river campus used to be the site of Oak Hill Golf Course. The golf course was moved to make way for the expansion of the university away from downtown. For one thing, some state leaders really wanted a medical school in Rochester, and there was not enough room at the downtown site. Also, the university had been pressured and funded into admitting women by Susan B. Anthony; the university administrators wanted the men to have their own new campus and leave the ladies the old buildings on Prince St.
I was not surprised to come across this statue of George Eastman, but I was surprised that it was so new, 2009, and donated by a group who call themselves the George Eastman Circle, a group of people who wish to carry on Eastman’s ideals of leadership, philanthropy and humanitarianism. Not a bad legacy.
