Today was a 10. Breakfast at Jine’s. Got to Lilac Festival just as it was opening at 10:00. The Kettle Korn line was only about 8 people long. Most of the lilacs were still at their peak and the smell was just as sweet.
The grounds weren’t as wet as I expected, and the Craft Show was good. The only disappointment was the pansy bed. I’ve never seen it look so bad. The flower petals were bent over and mildewed so the colors were all subdued.
I always stop by the Viet Nam Memorial when I’m in Highland Park. The Viet Nam War was a pivotal event for people my age. Within 1 year of my high school graduation, 4 boys from my graduating class were dead. In Highland Park there’s a placard for each young man from the 6 county area who died, and each placard lists the young man’s high school. These were our boys, sons, brothers, friends. I never pass up a chance to pay my respects.
