More on mini-golf:
I thought mini-golf might be an American invention, but it actually started at St. Andrew’s in Scotland where the real game was first played. In 1867, St. Andrew’s made a shorter course for women because women in that society were not allowed to lift clubs over their heads. It became popular in America in the 1920’s when Thomas Fairborn patented a surface for mini-golf courses made from cottonseed hulls, oil, green dye, and sand.
Actually, Rochester has the oldest mini-golf course still in use in the USA. Parkside Whispering Pines on Culver Rd in Sea Breeze was created as Tall Maples Miniature Golf Course in 1930 and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. I plan on playing there this summer.
One more fact: In 2007, the second Saturday of May was declared National Mini-Golf Day in the USA.
