I did some stepping today around the quilting tables at church. Every Tuesday morning, our quilting group meets to make quilts for Lutheran World Relief. This is a tradition that’s been going on for as long as our oldest members can remember. We use mostly donated fabric, old sheets, curtains, matress covers. We measure, cut, lay-out, stitch and tie the pieces into works of art.
In the spring, we’ll have the quilts blessed, and then Ed and June will drive them to Baltimore. From there, they’ll be shipped overseas to provide comfort for refugees from war and natural disasters. We never know who will receive our quilts, nor even what country they end up in. We just quilt in faith that God will use them to bless someone, somewhere.
Writing is kind of like quilting. A writer takes little stokes of nothing on paper, strings them into words, sentences, paragraphs. If she is brave, she’ll publish them, not knowing exactly who will read them, nor what effect they will have on that reader.
Quilting. Writing. Works of faith. How about taking your own step of faith today?
