Today I stepped back into the classroom setting with a book talk at Klem Road School in Webster.
The school is full of STAR students with lots of student work all over the walls. They have all the modern technology, and I did a Power Point presentation using a computer, projector, and microphone. I even used a special microphone for a hearing impaired girl. It made me think back to my elementary school days at #28 School in Rochester. We had an AV room in the center of the school that had no windows. I guess we went there for movies, and my Girl Scout troop met there after school, but my most distinct memory is the day the whole school crowded into the AV room, to watch on a small black and white TV, Alan Shephard blast off into space. Today’s kids can’t remember a time when there was no space travel or no computers. They can’t remember rotary phones or party lines, but I hope they can still summon up a sense of awe and wonder at something larger than themselves.
